WHY MUST IT BE SUCH A FEAT FOR OUR COUNTRY TO FEED OUR CHILDREN PROPERLY
By now, the world MUST know who Jamie Oliver is. I mean...you do know who he is right? Not only is he the coolest, most laid back lad, but he is health conscious and eager to help our country get it's nutrition back on track! Why not? Our country doesn't care about our health nor what we consume. It prefers to poison us for the sake of it's own personal wealth. It shouldn't have had to be a Brit that saved us, (even though I am grateful) It is our country who should have stood tall for us. But alas, what will be will be -Thank you Jamie.
To honor Jamie, lets share a little of his life's background. We already know he is a brilliant Englishman. His parents were pub owners, and from what I understand, (but don't take my word on it), he didn't graduate high school. He dropped out at the age of 16 and went straight into catering college. (Smart move Jamie! you found your calling early on in life and you are great at what you do! I however, do not approve of the dropping out part.)
In 1999 Jamie got his first food show, "The Naked Chef." From the very first time I watched Jamie in action in the kitchen, I fell in love with his skills. He was a natural; his recipes delicious. By the end of his shows, he left me looking like a drooling dog in desperate need to taste his food.
Jamie is the furthest thing from presumptuous. He can usually be found in his casual and ever so cozy attire of well worn jeans and a simple shirt and old tennis shoes. It's all quite comforting to be honest. Watching Jamie was like watching a friend prepare me dinner in his own kitchen. I soon ran out and purchased his cookbook which by the way, was as a best-seller in the UK and quite popular here in the United States.
Jamie doesn't seem to follow the norm. Just like he didn't finish high-school and went directly into catering school, he also didn't tell his wife when he put their house up for collateral when he decided to start what he called, "The Fifteen Foundation." This foundation allows for 15 people each year, to be trained in the restaurant business. People who are disadvantaged, those with criminal histories or drug abuse cases. If I didn't love Jamie before, this definitely pulled at my heart strings. Apparently Jamie believes in forgiving and second opportunities. Something these people rarely get and we all deserve.
Jamie has many more claims to fame of course. For example, Did you know he has cooked for Tony Blair? That he changed his countries government's view on how to feed the children and now the government is actively making changes for the children? (Unlike our country who we have to fight for healthy food in schools!) Currently, Jamie is establishing 30 restaurants in Asia and could considered one of the wealthiest people under 30 in the New York Times list? Pretty impressive resume right?
Well now, he can be found in our own country. He is here to see what he can do for our children. He is teaching us about health, good food and comradeship. The problem is, our country is fighting him on this all the way. There are those few and far between parents who take a stand and work with Jamie to bring all this good to fruition, but I have got to tell you, it is draining to watch all the opposition Jamie faces in our country, just because he wants to get us healthy. What is so wrong with wanting to make a wrong right in our school cafeterias? Let the man be, he is brilliant! And if you don't want healthy kids, that is too bad, because I do. Many of us do, and we are taking a stand.
